Have you heard of Feastly? It’s like the Airbnb for dinner, or a website where talented cooks can connect with adventurous eaters. Steve Price (or Don Stefano) invited some food bloggers to brunch at his house, which is in a quiet Fairfield neighborhood.
After a relatively easy 40 minute drive, I was sipping on a glass of wine next to a lake, in his beautiful backyard. “Brunch” turned out to be a delicious 4 hour, 5 course meal. Don Stefano used to be a winemaker when he got into cooking. He’s currently a website designer but still experiments regularly in the kitchen. We started with sliced tomatoes from his garden, served with burrata, basil and olive oil – simple and perfect. The most unique course was after the local salumi; the tender, flavorful Roasted Pig Face was served with a light coleslaw to cut through the richness. It was my first time eating Pig Face and both the cheek and that area behind the eye socket were super tasty.
Don Stefano, a self-proclaimed “pizza fanatic,” built a pizza oven in his backyard and developed a 3 day, cold-fermented dough recipe. The Bacon with Caramelized Onions was surprisingly light and Fennel Sausage with Red Peppers was flavorful. Don Stefano actually taught me how to assemble and cook the last pizza. After all that food, I was stuffed but couldn’t refuse dessert: a slice of Blueberry Galette. I’ve had flakier crusts, but the filling was full of flavor and not-too-sweet. And the homemade limoncello was a really nice gesture at the end of the meal.
We met some cool people and, overall, it was a great experience. One of the other guests explained it best. She said it’s “like a meal at your friend’s house without having to help.” I would definitely try another Feastly meal, especially one of Don Stefano’s. In fact, he mentioned something about a Moroccan menu in the next month or two.
