Nosy – Lovingly Handcrafted in Oakland

I became slightly lactose intolerant a few months ago so this is my first summer without regular trips to the ice cream parlor (cue the violins).   So you can imagine my surprise when I tasted oh so creamy Mr. Dewie’s Almond Ice Cream with my friend’s homemade cherry crisp: “Wait, THIS is vegan?  Are you sure???”  I stopped by their West Oakland kitchen to chat with co-founders (and brothers) Ari and Andrew Cohen.  It all started in the farmer’s market with almond milk and customers kept saying it would be good frozen. The rest, as they say, is history.  There are currently four flavors: Strawberry, Mint Chip, Mocha Chip and Salted Pecan and the ice cream is so flavorful creamy and you would never know that it’s vegan, soy-free and gluten-free.  In fact, it only has a few ingredients – and none of the stabilizers found in traditional ice cream.  Since it has a lot of protein it’s also a pretty good post-workout meal. The first grocery store that carried Mr. Dewie’s was Farmer Joe’s and it’s still there today.  It’s now also available in 36 Northern California Whole Foods as well as grocery stores all over the Bay Area.  Even though Mr. Dewie’s is slowly expanding, it’s still “lovingly handcrafted in Oakland, California,” as it proudly proclaims on each carton.  There’s a new organic cashew line that will be unveiled soon with four flavors: Coffee, Caramel Almond Crunch, Chocolate and Chocolate Orange Chocolate Chip.   My favorites were the intense chocolate and the bittersweet coffee and they’re excellent together too.  The plan is to also make vegan, gluten-free ice cream sandwiches somewhere down the line.
