Thirsty – Cocktail Crawl

I tagged along on the soft launch of Localite Tours‘ Retro Cocktails excursion.  We stopped at four bars and also learned about the interesting history of Uptown Oakland.  Have you ever stopped to really look at the Paramount sign?  Anyway, first we tried Bar Dogwood’s sweet-tart version of a Jack Rose (Apple Jack, Rye, Housemade Grenadine, Lemon Juice), which also happens to be Gertrude Stein’s favorite drink.  We were very appreciative when they also made some Grilled Cheese Sandwiches for the group.  Flora/Fauna was the next stop and we sampled the smoky, spicy Carter Beats the Devil (Tequila, Mezcal, Bird’s Eye Chile Tincture, Lime).  The third stop was Era, where we had a smooth-as-velvet Manhattan (Sweet Vermouth, Bourbon, Bitters) that was stirred for exactly 42 seconds.  Finally we ended up at Plum Bar with French Fries, House Pickles and a taste of the Sillaro (Rye, Nocino, Fallernum and House Bitters).  We also got to sample the Fallernum on it’s own, which was made in house and had coffee, butterscotch and citrus notes.   It was a new flavor combo to me and completely mind blowing.  We had a great time and were good friends by the end of the night.  Be careful though.  You should eat something beforehand and also be prepared to eat again afterwards. It was a little awkward when the tour ended and some folks started ordering food at Plum Bar and others didn’t.  By the way, not all of Localite’s tours are centered around food, but you should know they’re also launching the Enchanting Dinner and The Pork Tour in the next few weeks.
