Off the Grid, a weekly food truck gathering, added its first Oakland location a few months ago and I finally had a chance to check it out. Admission to the Oakland Museum is half price during the event, and there’s also a Makers & Tasters Series (appearances by local beer brewers, coffee roasters, candy makers, etc), film screenings, dance lessons, live music and 10-12 rotating food trucks. I’ve been wanting to check out The Chairman Truck for a few years now but never tried it because the line was always soooo long. Until now. There was a surprisingly short wait so I ordered a few Pork Belly Steamed Buns with Turmeric Pickled Daikon & Green Shiso ($3.75 each). Flavorful, savory, tender, oh yeah, they lived up to the hype and then some. After that, I ordered a Dark & Stormy from the cash bar (I think it was $5) and listened to the reggae band with an old friend. All in all, it was a really nice (affordable) night and it will probably get even better as the weather gets warmer. If you go, just make sure to stay until sunset. It was absolutely beautiful when the lights were twinkling.
