An East Bay Dish reader let me know that Mimosa Cafe is closed – before I got to try their brunch I’ve heard so much about.  I guess this is another “sign of the times,” as they call it.  Let’s not forget about our neighborhood spots so we don’t loose any more!

I have some good news for Cal students…CupKates cupcakes are now available at the UCB kiosk in Valley Life Sciences and at nearby Yali’s Cafe.  Now you can get your sugar fix on the way to class.

The East Bay got some love in the Chronicle’s Inside Scoop this week, when not one, but three restaurants were mentioned:

First, the Berkeley Cesar will stay focused on Spanish cuisine, while the Piedmont Cesar will transform into Cesar Latino around Valentine’s Day.  Executive Chef Maggie Pond will reveal a new menu inspired by Central and South American cuisine including “Mexican posole, Colombian tamales, Chilean sopapillas and Argentine bistec.”

Vik’s Chaat Corner closed on Wednesday and reopened in a new location yesterday.  While the new restaurant is 30-40% larger, the concept won’t change, but the extra kitchen space will probably lead to more/new things on the menu.

And finally, Commis will begin serving a “kitchen counter tasting menu” starting Feb. 26.  Only 6 people will be able to enjoy a menu that will change nightly and could last up to 3 hours.  The prixe fix is still $59, but the tasting menu will set you back $100-125, according to EaterSF.

The Chronicle also reported that Merritt Restaurant and Bakery is having money issues.  The City of Oakland gave them $162,00 to help pay their debts in October, but they’re still in trouble.  In easier times, they had as many as 110 employees and are now working with only 49.  Looks like we’ll have to wait until Feb. 18 to find out what the City Council committee decides.  According to Councilman Larry Reid, “This is a business with a lot of employees, and to have an institution like the Merritt Bakery close wouldn’t look good.”

According to Oakland Local, plastic bags aren’t given out anymore at all Urban Village Farmers Markets (Temescal, Montclair and Old Oakland).  The goal is to eventually be a “Zero Waste” zone so the farmers market is now BYOB – bring your own bag.  They’ll have Biodegradable bags for sale for forgetfull folks.
