Sweet Jimmie, Franklin Square Wine Bar, Valentine’s Singles Party

Jimmie Ward, the owner of Sweet Jimmie’s nightclub passed away last week, at the age of 74.  An article in the Oakland Tribune has a lot of information about his life and humanitarian work.  According to the East Bay Express, he opened the nightclub in 1987 as a “popular spot for the well-heeled, mature crowd, attracting local celebrities and players from the Raiders and the A’s.”  David, Sweet Jimmie’s son, began managing the club in 2004 when the blues and soul was replaced with hip hop. Violence drew the attention of city officials in 2006, causing the club to close.  The New Parish, a small performance space opened in October in the same location and comedian Dave Chappelle performing there this week.  Kimball’s will host a Lifetime Achievement Award Show & Benefit for Sweet Jimmie.
