If you ever wanted to learn how to pickle vegetables, this might be the class for you. Chef Georgia Pellegrini will teach different ways to flavor pickling liquids and how to process vegetables in canning jars. Pickled mushrooms, pink pickled onions, pickled ginger and rainbow pickled swiss chard stems are on the menu.

Fermented Change, a two month series of events to support West Oakland’s City Slicker Farms, kicks off with a Fermented Food Skill Share. Fermenters should bring a jar, cutting board and any veggies that might be lurking around in your fridge. The sourdough, kim chi, kraut and other goodies that are made will be sampled on the May 14 at the Fermented Foods Feast. The Diva of Desserts herself, Rose Levy Beranbaum will be signing copies of her newest cookbook at Blue Bottle Roastery. Some of the Bay Area’s pastry heavyweights (Amy Brown of NOPA, Bill Corbett of Coi, Sarah Cox of Dynamo Donuts, Jake Godby of Humphry Slocombe, Paul Masse of Masse’s Pastry, Nicole Krasinski) will offer tastings of a dessert inspired by one of Rose’s recipes. For those who like to sip coffee with their sweets, Blue Bottle will serve a special Rose’s blend. They will also sell 1/2 pound bags for your brewing pleasure.

Miette is now offering baking and decorating classes in their Oakland kitchen. Jeff Gosche, Miette’s cookie designer will teach techniques for making, coloring and piping royal icing. Serious students can also choose from 3-week and 6-week classes. There there are even classes for kids!

The 2nd annual Taste of the East Bay promises to be a “delicious and fun-filled evening.” Over 30 East Bay restaurants will offer tastings to go with the live music and silent auction. Paticipating restaurants include Bakesale Betty, Bay Wolf, Everett & Jones, Summer Summer Thai, La Cocina Mexicana, Wood Tavern. Over 10 wineries will also participate in the evening’s activities. Hosted by the Alta Bates Summit Foundation, proceeds will go to Thunder Road, a teen substance abuse program, and the Carol Ann Read Beast Health Center.
