Hibiscus opened around 2 ½ years ago with Chef Sarah Kirnon in the kitchen, but she left a couple months ago to work on opening her own restaurant. Hibiscus took the opportunity to close for minor renovations while chef Greg Leon developed a new menu. The restaurant reopened last Tuesday and was completely booked. According to Leon, after a few days of the “usual opening week deal,” the kitchen hood went out on Thursday and he and his crew were told to “take Friday and get some rest” since the restaurant would be closed for repairs. He returned to the restaurant on Saturday, only to realize that it had been open the day before. The menu had been changed, and they had “condensed the one I had created for them, made a substitution here and there and removed my name.” The chef, his lead line cook and pastry cook were let go amid much confusion. Leon tells me he’s hasn’t decided on his next project, but he is planning some pop-up dinners.
