Suya African-Caribbean Grill opened on Tuesday primarily as a takeout spot, although there are a couple seats. It’s named after a spice rub popular in West Africa, suya pepper, which is a combination of ground nuts, cayenne, ginger, paprika and onion powder. When I was invited for dinner, the owner described his childhood memories of eating this spicy street food and literally crying from the heat, but not being able to stop because it was so good. They’ve adapted the dish for American palettes and toned down the spice quite a bit. The tilapia had a little heat, and was served on flatbread with sliced onions. The beef was also seasoned with the same mix, but it was overcooked for my taste. I was also introduced to Chapman, which is a refreshing fruit punch made with cucumber, cranberry juice and some other top secret ingredients. Suya is open Mon – Sat from 11am – 9pm.
