Did you know about the Oakland Gift Card? Neither did I. In addition to local beauty, electronics, housewares, books and clothing businesses, several restaurants also accept the card (Caffe 817, Tina Tamale, The Rising Loafer Cafe & Bakery, Phat Matt’s BBQ, Vo’s Restaurant and The Layover). Yeah, one of my friends will be getting one for his next birthday. The folks at Oakland Grown are going to start a system like airline miles, where you can earn points as you use the gift card and then redeem them at local businesses. Since the word “points” is kind of boring, they’re holding a contest to come up with a more creative name and the winner will get a free $50 gift card. Oh, and “Oakbucks” is already being considered – you gotta do better than that.
