Oliveto Cafe usually has a Happy Hour every summer, but when I met a friend there a couple weeks ago, it was our first experience. We started with Complimentary bites (fermented mustard-seed carrot pickles, crunchy, spiced Ceci beans and thin, crisp whole wheat pizza dough “thingys”) and also ordered the comforting Arancini with mozzarella, Parmesan and tomato ($6.50), the addictive Fritti of pole beans with Calabrian chili aioli ($6.50) and the creamy Cannellini of cauliflower and Pecorino cheese ($6.50). There were also four cocktails on the menu and in the name of research, we tried all of them. The server described The Oliveto (Gin, Licor 43, egg whites, olive oil and lemon, $8) as “refreshing” but it was aggressively sour to me. My favorite was the boozy Alameda Sazerac (St. George Bourbon, St. George Absinthe, simple syrup, bitters, lemon twist, $9). Now, both the Strawberry Cooler (vodka, muddled fresh strawberry, mint, $7) and the Summer Rum Punch (Light and Dark Rums, seasonal fruit juices, Prosecco and mint, $6) were light and refreshing. We didn’t take advantage of this but all well drinks and wines by the glass were also $2.00 off.
