Nosy – A Puerto Rican Food Truck

Borinquen Soul hit the streets of Oakland about a month ago, primarily serving the late night crowd.  Originally from the Bronx, the only time owners Eric Rivera (former Bar Manager at Jesso’s and Everett & Jones) and Chris Caraballo (former sales manager at the Clift Hotel) ate Puerto Rican food was at home so they decided to bring it to the public with a food truck.

I stopped by one evening when it was parked on Lakeshore and enjoyed the music while I was waiting for my order.  It’s pretty much impossible to hear salsa and stand still.  I tried Combo 2: Pollo Frito, Arroz con Guandules y Plátano Maduro–Fried Chicken Wings, Rice with Pigeon Peas and Fried Plantains – $10.  The chicken wings had wonderfully crispy skin with tender meat, but they were a little too salty and while the rice was savory and flavorful, it was a bit oily.  Now, those plantains were some of the best I’ve ever had outside of my Dominican host mother’s kitchen.  They were substantial, yet somehow so tender they melted on my tongue.  Not bad at all for the first month of operation.  They plan to expand hours to include lunch and happy hour in Oakland and San Francisco.  I will definitely be back to try the Alcapurrias (seasoned ground beef inside mashed yucca and green plantain, then deep fried).  Oh yeah.
