Nosy – Bagels, Jerk Tacos & Frozen Yogurt

When Jamieson Walker (of the band Dirty Focus) made Jerk Chicken for bandmate Stonia Seng’s 30th birthday a few weeks ago, she came up with the idea to make tacos with the leftovers.  Moonlite Bites was created and since Jamieson was a regular at Room 389, they decided to set up at the local bar.  The food catering business’ summer menu consists of three Jerk Chicken Tacos with Purple Cabbage and white Corn Salsa with a side of watermelon ($10).  The tacos were sweet and spicy, made with organic ingredients and served on compostable products.  They just started last week and plan to be on Room 389’s patio every Thursday from 5:30 – 9pm.  But if you want your tacos crispy, get there before 9pm when they move inside.

Authentic Bagel Company was started last year by two brothers originally from the East Coast.  Mark and Jason Scott have been baking and selling their bagels wholesale to cafes in the East Bay and this past Sunday was the first time they opened their new space for customers.  Honestly, I only planned on eating half, but I ended up devouring the whole thing.  With a thick skin and a soft but dense interior, it had a yeasty fragrance – definitely not your average bagel.  Single bagels (plain, sesame, salt, everything, onion, cinnamon raisin, poppy, whole wheat) are $1.75 unless you get them toasted with cream cheese.  Those are $2.75 and by the way, they have several different flavors of cream cheese including roasted garlic.  A dozen bagels go for $15 – and they deliver!

The only Northern California branch of national frozen yogurt chain Red Mango is in the East Bay and it opened about about a week and a half ago. When I stopped by the other day, I sampled several flavors like white peach, mango and strawberry milk shake but they were so artificial tasting.  Instead I went for Original and Chocolate and added strawberries, blueberries and diced mango.  The texture of the frozen yorgurt was incredibly creamy, not icy like what you might find at other places.  By the way, the self-serve yogurt is $ .45 an ounce and they don’t charge sales tax if you get it to go.
