Nosy – Sopecitos de Chorizo

Somerset closed a couple months ago, and the owner opened Destino Bar & Restaurant next door to Camino on Saturday.  There are small plates, entrees and cocktails on the menu, all influenced by Latin American cuisine.  I was told that the rum in my La Caña cocktail (rum, mint, lime, ginger, $10.50) was from Nicaragua.  It was a little too sweet, but still pretty refreshing.  The Sopecitos de Chorizo on the small plate menu were more satisfying (three corn cakes topped with local chorizo, guacamole, queso fresco, $6.50).  The chorizo was enrobed in this complex, velvety sauce made of chili negro and oranges.  Chef Marisol del Río is from central Mexico, where she worked in restaurants and taught at a culinary school.  She’s been catering in the Bay Area for about 5 years before helping to open Destino.  According to her, the food isn’t Mexican per say, but rather what she likes to cook and eat.  From what I can tell from my first visit, it’s what I want to eat too. Open daily, 4 – 11pm.
