Nosy – Sandwiches!

I must have been the happiest person in Oakland when I learned husband and wife team David Wasem and May Seto opened Grand Lake Kitchen last Wednesday.  My neighborhood was in serious need of a deli, and my lunch the other day did not disappoint.  May, who used to be the General Manager at Delfina and Pizzeria Delfina,  efficiently runs the front of the house.  David, who was the Executive Chef at Balboa Cafe and Sous Chef at Park Tavern, is in charge of the kitchen.  And let me tell you, the man knows what he’s doing.  The menu is “a mix of traditional deli fare and seasonally driven dishes,” along with beer and wine.  While my Roasted Pork Belly Sandwich ($11, pickled fennel, chimichurri, sweet roll) was flavorful, I found myself daydreaming about the bite Paula offered me of her sandwich.  The Oyako ($10, open-faced egg salad, crispy chicken skin, mache, sliced rye) was just more texturally interesting and new to me.  That’s what I’ll order next time.
