Nosy – Oakland’s Newest Bakery

After Remedy Coffee closed unexpectedly last summer, I’ve been waiting to see what would open in its place.  Well, according to Facebook, Barkada Bakery, which has been popping-up with baked goods and coffee on the sidewalk during construction, officially opened on Saturday.  Barkada means “group of friends” in Tagalog, which is the native language of pastry chef-owner Christina Bondoc.  Virtually everything will be made in house using organic ingredients – grass fed butter, whole grain wheat from Guisto’s, etc.  Some items on the menu include croissants, morning buns, sandwiches, salads, cakes and coffee.  Speaking of coffee, co-owner Rich Yarussi is a “certified coffee geek”  and proudly serves West Oakland’s Scarlet City.  I stopped by a pop-up about a month ago for a Bittersweet Chocolate & Orange scone ($3.25).  Construction is finally over and the bakery is currently open for limited hours, with plans to expand in the next week or so.
