Desco

Chef-owner Donato Scotti, who is best known for Donato Enoteca in Redwood City, opened Descoin the former Borgo Italia space a couple weeks ago.The Latin word for dinner table, Desco serves antipasti, pasta, pizza and main dishes. I was invited to check out the new restaurant so a friend and I had dinner last week.  We ordered the Piatto Della Casa (smoked duck, lamb prosciutto & rabbit terrine, $10) and the Crudo of fresh local fish & carta musica, $9. The crudo was a delicate dish with fruity olive oil, fried capers and a housemade cracker. Let’s just say I would definitely order it again. One of the chef’s specialties is the Casonsei (pork & amaretto crumbs ravioli, brown butter & guanciale, $12) and it did not disappoint.  It was rich, buttery and salty-sweet. Unfortunately, the undercooked, undersalted Spaghetti Carbonara ($11) was less successful. But the wood-fired Margherita Pizza (tomato, mozzarella & oregano, $11) was promising. I like my pizza crust to support its own weight when suspended in midair. This one sagged, but the flavors were awesome: light tomato sauce, plenty of herbs, and charred in spots.
