Berkeley’s Bittersweet Cafe

Rockridge’s Bittersweet Cafe opened a second location in Downtown Oakland last year and the Berkeley cafe opened at the beginning of the summer. After missing lunch a few days ago, I stopped by for an early dinner. I didn’t see the price listed for the sandwich I ordered, so when I added a brownie and and was charged $11, it seemed expensive, especially since it didn’t come with a side salad. I decided on Turkey with Cheddar, spicy Aysa Mayo (named after an employee), Dijon Mustard, Avocado, Tomato and Lettuce on Wheat Bread. It seemed like it took a really long time for the woman to make my sandwich, and I found myself silently threatening the poor lady: “This better be the best sandwich of my life…or else!” Maybe I was just hungry. The good news is it turned out to be fresh, flavorful, substantial and filling – I didn’t even need a side salad. And, the brownie was as fudgy and rich as I remembered.
