One International Cafe opened last week on Telegraph Avenue. The three partners (Alex Asefaw, Von Luong and Patrick Vaughn) are Eritrean, Filipino and American, so the cafe offers an organic twist on those cuisines – and others. When I stopped by for breakfast, I ordered the Filipino Tocino ($6.95) and the cashier suggested substituting the pita for a croissant. When the plate arrived at my table, I curiously tasted the purple stuff on the side without asking about the ingredients. It turned out to be a yogurt-granola-pineapple-blackberry thing and since I’m slightly lactose intolerant, I had to quickly take a pill. Note to self: ask before you taste. Anyway, the pale tomato slices and the iceberg lettuce didn’t really look appetizing, but the chicken was tender and sauteed with bell peppers and onions, and then topped with a runny egg. It was salty, sweet, flaky, gooey – and not too filling. Perfect for a Sunday morning.
