Apartment Kitchens: the good, the bad and the ugly

For the past 3 months, I’ve been searching for an apartment and it’s been really hard for a food lover like me.  I write a lot about eating, so you might not know that I also love to cook and bake. Along with some other things, a decent kitchen is very important to me, and it was surprisingly hard to find.  Here are some of the kitchens I’ve seen: the good, the bad and the ugly.

kitchen 1, east day dishMy heart skipped a beat when I saw these appliances, especially the Stainless Steel French Door Refrigerator that’s not pictured. But the rent was expensive.

kitchen 10, east bay dishI loved the storage space and the gas stove, but didn’t love the neighborhood.

kitchen 8, east bay dishIs it just me, or is something out of place?

kitchen 11, east bay dishAbout how many cubic millimeters of counter space, you think?

kitchen 7, east bay dishThe 70’s called.  They want their wallpaper back.

kitchen 13, east bay dishHmm…something’s unbalanced.

kitchen 6, east bay dishThis was called a “fairy cottage” but it looks like a gnome lives here.

I’m moving to a new neighborhood this weekend! Do you want to see my new kitchen?

  2. YES! I would love to see your new kitchen. Congrats on finding a place – I know it’s been a painful journey. I loved the first kitchen you found and laughed at the one that is “out of place” :D.  We’re trying to find a house with a nice kitchen and backyard and it’s been difficult.

  3. Great article! Keep us posted on your progress in making the new rental a home you will love and how the neighborhood is. We are in the process of finding a rental as well but like you said, it is either new but too small, or big but too old, or big and old but in high demand because of the neighborhood. If they are new and big, it’s like mortgaging a house. People have said to me I might as well move to Antioch and mortgage a house but I love Oakland and Berkeley!
