Belly Serves Asian-Fusion Tacos in Uptown Oakland

I’ve been hearing about the Asian-inspired tacos at Belly, since it opened in Uptown about four months ago, so I did what any curious person in this millennium would do.  I googled it.  And when I went to the “About” section of their website to learn more, there were only two lines: “Good food, no frills. Come see for yourself.”  So I did.

It was a small space and there were just a few tables, but it felt nice inside.

I asked for recommendations and the woman at the counter suggested three tacos so I could try a few different things from the menu.  Now, these aren’t your average tacos.  As expected, they’re more expensive than my favorite taco truck, but I was surprised that the Asian-inspired ingredients were served on a flour (not corn) tortilla.  From left to right…

The crunchy Shrimp + Avocado Taco (Shrimp Tempura, Avocado, Sesame Slaw, Cucumbers, Spicy Sour Cream, $4), the tender Pork Belly Taco (Spicy Honey Roasted Pork Belly, Sesame Slaw, Pickled Cucumbers, $3.75) and my favorite, The Steak + Eggs Taco (House Marinated Steak, Fries, Fried Egg with Chipotle Aioli and Garlic Aioli, $4.25).  Let me give you a better look…

The steak had all of those glorious Bulgogi flavors, and every bite was gooey and chewy.  Next time, I would ask for crispy fries because I’m convinced the added texture would take it to the next level.

In addition to the Tacos and Burritos, they also have salads, burgers, the insane-sounding Cali Fries (French Fries, House Marinated Steak, Spicy Sour Cream, Lime Cilantro Sour Cream, Pico de Gallo, Guacamole, Corn Salsa, Cheddar, $10) and ice cream sandwiches on the menu.

I must have been extra hungry that day because I walked to Liba Falafel for more food.  That was the day I had two lunches and no dinner…
