If you’re detoxing after the holidays – and even if you’re not – you should know that Christy Osorio (former manager of Bissap Baobab) and Alana Corpuz (former director of a community garden) recently opened La Sombra.

2014-12-22 22.34.53It’s a pop-up juice bar inside Bissap Baobab and they serve organic, raw juices and smoothies made to order.  La Sombra means “shade” in Spanish and “the name arose after a Hieroglyphics concert in West Oakland.  The event was amazing but the day was scorching hot, so hot that myself and many others became dehydrated, faint, and over heated.  A few days after the event we shared similar stories where each of us independently found sanctuary in the shade.  A refreshing, rejuvenating, and healing space.”

I stopped by one morning and tasted several juices and smoothies from the menu.  They all were “a gentle balance of fruits and greens” and it was obvious that both taste and nutrition were priorities.  They even make their own coconut and almond milk in house.

I tasted several juices ($6.50) including The Food Forest (kale, celery, carrot, spinach, cucumber, lemon, parsley, mint) and Orange Sun (orange, carrot, lemon, sunflower sprouts) as well a couple smoothies ($7.50): Buenos Días (raw almond milk, oats, banana, kale, mixed berries).

I took a Spinach Island Dreams smoothie (Raw coconut milk, mango, spinach, raspberries, banana, raw hemp seeds) to go and not only did it keep me satisfied until lunch, it gave me a ton of energy.
