Since yesterday was National Burger Day, this was definitely on my mind. Where can you find the best burger in Oakland? People seem to have strong opinions about burgers, so this question always sparks a lively debate. I need your suggestions, so leave your thoughts in the comments.
What’s the best….?

Bargain: Ahn’s char broil
Restaurant: Sparky’s (on Redwood, not Piedmont ave)
Unique: Hopscotch
Veggie: That’s not a burger
Bargain: Flipside, 3401 Lakeshore Ave. 1/2 patty is standard and not over-salted. Cheerful fast service and “we’ll do anything you want!” is the way it should be, and does a perfect medium-rare. Excellent sweet potato fries.
Restaurant: Mockingbird. Simple old-fashioned burger, nice traditional bun, balanced flavors.
Unique: Nobody – our pick for ‘unique’ would be Jason Kwon’s great little touch of kimchi, bacon, and Cheddar on two large Kobe beef sliders at Joshu-Ya Brasserie/Berkeley. Nothing in Oakland can touch it.
Veggie: Nations but only the one on Broadway/Jack London Square.
Doc’s of the Bay food truck has a fantastic black bean veggie burger.
I’ve been meaning to try Doc’s for soooo long. I can never make it out to the food truck!
