Based on College Avenue, Ici Ice Cream recently opened a second shop in Downtown Berkeley and I’ve already stopped by twice! I was happy to see that they had the same unique ice cream flavors and homemade cones I’ve grown to love over the years.
Owner Mary Canales was a pastry chef at Chez Panisse before opening Ici to focus on her favorite food. Everything is made from scratch using organic ingredients and the ice cream is smooth and intense without being overpowering.
After thinking about my last few visits, I realized I developed a system. This is how I order the best ice cream cone at Ici:
Step 1: Go on a sunny day.
I eat ice cream all year round, but I enjoy it most when the sun is out. And if it happens to be a cold day, I eat in my car with the heat running.
Step 2: Stop by during off hours.
The original location usually has a pretty long line, but there was no wait at the second location in late afternoon. It was kind of like comparing the experience at both Berkeley Bowl locations (if you know what I mean). And it could be my imagination, but I think ice cream tastes better when there’s instant gratification.
Step 3: Think about what I want in advance.
Depending on the day, I either want something new and exciting or classic and comforting. The good news is Ici can satisfy both cravings.
Step 4: Taste a few flavors.
They offer 8 to 11 flavors everyday and I taste until the scooper gets annoyed. After some trial and error, I learned to ask for 2-3 tastes at a time to make it easier for her. And I love that Ici has reusable spoons so I don’t have to worry about creating more waste.
Step 5: Come up with a plan.
I usually order an ice cream cone with two scoops. The flavors are complementary and I ask for my favorite on the bottom (so I can save the best for last).
Step 6: Eat everything.
I always forgot that Ici seals their handmade cones with a little chocolate, but that’s ok because the last bite is a pleasant surprise.
The two winning combos I came up with so far were Honey Lavender & Lemon Rosemary Toffee and Chocolate & Burnt Caramel; both were incredibly delicious. The flavors were mature and sophisticated, but they made me grin in delight and feel like a kid.
What are your favorite flavors at Ici?
