Nosy – Japanese & Mexican

Hopscotch, Oakland’s newest restaurant is scheduled to open this Friday in the former Chef Edwards Bar-B-Que space.  Chef/owner Kyle Itani has classical training and extensive experience in Japanese kitchens (Yoshi’s) and was recently working at The Meatball Shop in New York City.  He’ll bring “Japanese inspired regional American” cuisine to Hopscotch, including interesting sounding dishes like Kirin Steamed Clams with  house made Merguez sausage and duck fat potato chips, Marinated Pork Belly Grinder with daikon carrot salad and a Yuzu Meringue Pie.  The other owner, Jenny Schwarz is responsible for the front of the house, the booze, and has plans to make her own bitters.

Remember when I first discovered Nido’s food club?  I’ve been keeping in touch with Sylvia and Cory McCollow and and I’m happy to report they’ve found a space in Jack London Square.  The husband and wife team envisions the upcoming restaurant as “a neighborhood hangout with a focus on heritage, community and food.”  With experience at Cosecha and Chez Panisse, Sylvia plans to serve Mexican inspired cuisine prepared with California ingredients for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch.  They hope to open sometime in September.
