Opening
Remember when I wrote about how eVe would be opening soon in Berkeley? Well according to TastingTableSF, Christopher and Veronica Laramie (husband and wife, chef and pastry chef) are opening tonight with prixe fix menus: 3 courses for $33, 5 for $55 and 7 for $77. Word is they’re serving “dishes like corned beef with horseradish and brussels sprouts and halibut with grapefruit and saffron.”

According to Grub Street, Chef Eric Tucker (formerly of Millennium) is planning to open the newest addition to the Jack London Square dining scene tomorrow. But carnivores beware; this might not be the spot for you. Encuentro, a vegetarian tapas wine bar will serve sandwiches, salads, bruscetta, small plates and sweets.

Charlie Hallowell, the owner of Pizzaiolo, is almost ready to open another restaurant in the old Di Bartolo space according to EaterSF. The name of the new restaurant is definitely a conversation starter: Boot and Shoe Service. Supposedly, it’s playing homage to the previous tenants in the “semi-historic building” and they’re planning to open any day now. Last year, Hallowell said he wanted this restaurant to be different from Pizzaiolo with “big, oblong pizzas are all laid out on a counter, and you tell them how much you want and if you want it heated up. Then you pay by the weight. … They’re awesome. … I’d have just maybe five tables inside and a couple more outside, and offer these pizzas and a couple of beers and wines.”

Addie’s Pizza Pie is scheduled to open in the former Spud location in February, according to SFoodie. Jennifer Millar (Sweet Adeline) and Thomas Schnetz (Doña Tomás, Tacubaya, Flora) are going to work together to provide South Berkeley with New York style pizza made with California ingredients, salads and………drum roll please……..frozen custard, which is “an ice cream enriched with egg yolks, churned at a slower speed, and held at a warmer temperature.”

Closing
According to KTVU, Oakland’s largest bookstore, Barnes & Noble, will close on January 31 due to declining sales. The building’s owner has already started talks with prospective tenants, and wants another dining or entertainment business to add to all the other new restaurants. By the way, the grand opening of the Jack London Market looks like it’s being pushed back to next summer.

Leaving
You might remember when I wrote about how George Morrone just became the Executive Chef of K2 Restaurant Group (Lalime’s, Fonda, T-Rex and Sea Salt) with goals to work with each restaurant’s chef to revamp the menus, starting with Lalime’s. According to the Chronicle, it looks like there have been some conflicts in the kitchen. Steve Jaramillo, who has been Lalime’s executive chef for 10 years has resigned: “I was no longer in agreement with the direction K2 was taking the restaurant, nor the means employed to get here,” he said. “I just don’t run a kitchen the way George Morrone does.” I wonder what will happen next…
