Frugal – Sweets For Your Sweetie

It’s time to start thinking about Valentine’s Day, so here’s a delicious option that’s easy on the wallet: Chunky Pig’s Candied Bacon Bark ($10).  First, Gina Conedera makes her signature Bacon Caramel Corn “made with Pure Vermont Maple Syrup and loads of twice-candied Niman Ranch Bacon.”  Then she smothers it in Cordillera Single Origin Colombian Dark Chocolate.  I know, at first I didn’t get it either.  It sounded like too much going on, but trust me…the result is wonderfully salty-sweet plus a slight bitterness from the chocolate.  Let’s just say it completely ruined my dinner – one of the perks of adulthood.

There are lots of other goodies available for advance purchase and then you can pick them up at Kitchener starting at 3pm.  Then at 5pm, the art gallery across the street, Creative Growth, and Kitchener will open their doors for a Valentine’s Night Market with arts & crafts, and food & wine for sale.  In addition to Chunky Pig, other artisans include Art Is In Coffee (Fudge, vegan fudge, coffee), Bump City Bakery (Lemon and chocolate mini pies), Green Girl Bakeshop (Ice cream sandwiches), Oakland Bakes (Slices of cake, tarlettes, cookies), Oven Lovin Catering (Cupcake and truffles), The Stroopie Gourmet (Stroopwafels), Sugar Knife Marshmallows (Marshmallows), Barbarian Gourmet (Duck Potstickers and heart cookies), Green and Go (Spring roll salad with baked tofu), Javi’s Cooking (Empanadas and alfajores), SunnySide Biscuits and Catering (oyster po’ boy biscuits), Flan Flan Ta-Ta’s and Lusu Cellars.  Plus, there will also be free beer.

Oh, and remember that Valentine’s baking class fundraiser for the Ella Baker Center?  We decided to make it a donation event to be more accessible…pay-what-you-can cupcakes for everybody!
