Edible Excursions is starting a new Tasting Temescal tour and I was invited to a media preview a couple weeks ago. Starting at the Farmer’s Market, it was basically three hours of getting to know each other and the neighborhood…doughnuts, iced coffee, grilled cheese, Korean food and on and on. I was glad for the walk between all the tastes and both full and happy by the end.
Sundays, 11am – 2pm
$75

One of the stops on the tour was Scream Sorbet, the small business that started in farmer’s markets 4 years ago and then added a store about 2 years later. After getting an email from a reader about the shop closing, I stopped by to talk with founder Nate Kurz. Unfortunately, even with a quality product the business is not sustainable. There are unpaid bills and the city is requiring plans for architectural improvements to the store before they extend the permit. Right now, Scream is looking for an investor or partner that would be able to handle the business logistics and free Kurz to focus on production. The business could close in the next couple weeks so you might want to stock up on sorbet while you still can.

Juhu Beach Club, which is also on the tour, is opening officially this Friday. Named after a beach in Mumbai known for street food, chef-owner Preeti Mistry is taking over the former SR24. We tried crispy Gujarati-style Samosas with Tamarind-Date and Cilantro Chutneys ($7), a flavorful Sloppy Lil’P (Buttery and Spicy Veggie Sloppy Joe on custom Starter Bakery buns, $5) and not-too-sweet Sassy Lassi ($4). I can’t wait to go back for dessert. Straus Soft-Serve Vanilla Ice Cream ($4) will be served with various toppings ($.75 each) Sea Salt Curried Peanuts, Chai-Spiced Candied Pecans, Anise and Fennel candy Sprinkles, Cadbury Chocolate Flakes, Syrups (Passion Fruit, Guava, Rosewater, Pomegranate). Juhu Beach Club is definitely adding something new to the neighborhood.
