Nosy – The Deep Dish Pizza Of My Dreams

When San Francisco-based Little Star Pizza came to the East Bay three years ago, I was excited, but unfortunately, never made it out to dinner in Albany.  So I was happy to learn one of the owners was opening The Star in my neighborhood.  I’ve been keeping an eye on it and I’m happy to report that after several delays, it finally opened Sunday night in the former Milano space.  The menu looks similar with starters, salads, thin crust and deep dish pizzas.  Sandwiches were added, and also more pizza options named after East Bay neighborhoods and landmarks.  Oh, and how could I forget the bar?  It’s a family-friendly restaurant, and there’s also a pretty sizable bar, which I think is another variation from the original.  There were some interesting sounding cocktails on the menu and my Old Fashioned (Old Bardstown Bourbon, Old Overholdt Rye, Aztec Chocolate Bitters, Orange Bitters, $10) was nicely balanced, with the bitters accentuating the notes in the bourbon.  Since it was opening night, it took a while for my Chicago-style deep dish pizza (The Port, with sausage, mushrooms, onions, green bell peppers, $19) but that thing was so freakin amazing it was worth the wait.  Their signature cornmeal crust offered crunch and texture, and served as the foundation for the fresh veggies.  The chunky tomato sauce on top was slightly tart, with just a hint of sweetness and sprinkled with dried herbs.  It was the Deep Dish Pizza of my dreams.
