Over the past few years, Krista Gettle has competed in several cooking competitions, including SF Food Wars, the Bacon Takedown and the SF Bay Chili Cook-Off. After placing in several competitions, it’s not surprising that she started working out of Kitchener to do catering and pop-ups as Common Fare Foods. With a background in event planning, she also just established Oakland Food Events as a way to give entrepreneurs exposure and also raise money for local non-profits. Krista plans to organize smaller competitive cooking events where people attending can taste the food and interact with the cooks. The first official event, Viva Tamales, is hosted by Tina Tamale, and is a celebration for Mexican Independence Day. There will be competitors in three categories: meat (Moles y Tamales la Oaxaqueña, Evil Jerk Cart, Alicia’s Tamales Los Mayas), vegetarian/vegan (Sanctuary Bistro, Decolonize Your Diet) and wildcard (Fist of Flour, Little Shop Artisan Box, Common Fare Foods). Beer & Sangria will be available for sale and proceeds will go to La Clínica de la Raza. Krista set aside two free tickets for east bay dish readers – log in below to enter.
