Tierra Mía Coffee Opens on Broadway

I stopped by Tierra Mía Coffee’s soft opening the other day.  With seven locations in LA and one in San Francisco, they officially opened an Oakland cafe on Monday.  Owner Ulysses Romero went to Cal and Stanford and got into coffee while studying in college. The cafe is pretty big, but comfortable with beautiful wood work throughout. It seems like a good place to work or meet up with a group, and it’s conveniently located across from the 19th Street BART station. Now, Tierra Mía isn’t your typical cafe. It imports coffee from around the world and pays 50 – 400% more than fair trade as a way to invest in sustainable family farms.  Then, Tierra Mía roasts the meticulously processed coffee in a vintage 1957 Probat roaster. I tried the rich Cafecito Cubano con Leche ($3.75) and the spiced Horchata Latte ($3.75), but it was the Geisha Varietal from Panama, Boquete – Hacienda la Esmeralda ($3.95) that stole my heart.  The beans were roasted just to “pie crust” color so the flavor really came through.  It wasn’t aggressively bitter like some coffee is.  This one was subtle but complex, with citrus notes.  Just be careful because Tierra Mía’s coffee is much more potent than what most cafes serve. I don’t drink coffee very often, so I started feeling jittery after only drinking half a cup!
