The SF Bay Chili Cook Off is a casual competition at Classic Cars West. Cooks in previous competitions have offered a traditional chili or one way out of the box (Buffalo Chili? Pumpkin Chili? Beet Chili???). This year, competitors include Evil Jerk, Tina Tamale, Ruth Stroup, Ruby Red Kitchen, Looney’s BBQ and Raise the Root (who’s the reigning champion). A panel of judges (including yours truly) will choose the Best Texas Style and Most Original. Everyone will be able to taste and vote for your favorites, and most popular chili will win People’s Choice. Commonwealth will be serving Linden Street in the beer garden and there will be sweets from Pie Hole and Tart Bakery. Entertainment includes live music from Mnemonics, Buki the clown and an Oakland Fire engine. All proceeds go to Adopt a Special Kid, an Oakland based nonprofit that has been finding foster kids permanent homes for 40 years. Two free tickets will be given to the writer of the Best Chili Haiku. To enter, post your poem on Facebook by April 19 at 5pm.
