Since moving to the Laurel District a few months ago, and I’ve been exploring the small businesses that are close to my apartment. Welcome to Living in the Laurel, a new series where I introduce you to my hood.
I discovered the newer, bigger Farmer Joe’s Market Place last year and it was like Berkeley Bowl, but without the stress. But since I moved to the Laurel, I’ve been going to the original location on MacArthur because I always have a good experience. And since shopping there, I’ve discovered several locally made products. Most Oaklanders have been to Genova’s Deli for a sandwich, but did you know they also make products? The chunky marinara sauce was oh-so-flavorful and obviously made by hand. And if you’re looking for a snack, the Ginger No Cookie was so tender and full of spice, it’s hard to believe it’s both vegan AND gluten-free. I noticed Bay Area Bee Company during my last visit, and it looked good, but I haven’t tried it yet. The prices were not the lowest, but there were definitely some deals. One of the cheapest and easiest meals I’ve ever made included boiling a package of ramen (without the seasoning packet) with fresh veggies and then mixing in a spoonful of sweet chili sauce and oyster sauce. The whole meal was about $2 and it was delicious!
