Have you ever been to Merritt Bakery? I’ve only been twice, but this was years ago. Both times I ordered chicken and waffles. One time it was delicious and one time it wasn’t, and since there were so many other restaurants that interested me, I never made it back…until now.
The restaurant is temporarily closed while they install a fire sprinkler system. In the meantime, they’ve been open in the former Kwik Way location since December. It’s a small take-out spot, with a few tables outside and I just happened to be at the bank next door when I transitioned from hungry to hongry.
They have a huge menu, but I ordered chicken and waffles and hoped for the best. While I was waiting (about 15 minutes), they fried the chicken to order and a line formed as more and more people were ordering. They packed up my order to go, but since I was hongry, I had to eat immediately. I sat down at a table outside, unpacked everything, took this picture with my phone and WENT IN.
Unfortunately, the butter was too cold to be spreadable with the little plastic knife, but the golden waffle was fluffy inside.
The fried chicken thighs were so crunchy, there was an audible CRUUUUNCH as I took my first bite. My eyes widened in surprise. Both the skin and the meat were gently seasoned and I smiled as chicken juice dripped down my chin. You guys, the fried chicken was legit.
The only things that could’ve made the experience better would’ve been silverware and maple syrup (instead of the imitation stuff), so I’d take the food home next time. Still, my spontaneous meal was filling, messy and thoroughly enjoyable, and I left completely satisfied.
