Last Sunday, I was walking around the lake with my talented photographer friend Diane Bezucha. We passed by the Lakeview branch of the Oakland Library and discovered Bites at the Lake, a weekly gathering of food trucks in the parking lot. It’s a good way to have lunch with a group, because everyone can order what they want and still eat together. Karen Hester is the organizer and the lineup changes every week. I was happy to see several familiar vendors including Liba Falafel, Go Streatery, Doc’s Classic Comfort Food and Curbside Creamery. There were also a couple I’d never seen before, so it was cool to try something new.
Pelican Poboys serves sandwiches and burgers out of this psychedelic truck. It’s crazy-looking, but I kind of love it.

Karen offered us lunch and you already know what happened next. I mean…when someone asks if you want a Shrimp Poboy, you say YES.

I would use less mayo and a bread that’s less fluffy, but it was loaded with plump, perfectly-cooked shrimp. Yum!

Then we walked across the parking lot to Kancha’s Kitchen, a mobile vendor that cooks Nepalese food under a canopy.

We tried the Chicken Momos, which were tender, flavorful dumplings served with a spicy curry sauce. Delicious!

This weekend, Kancha’s Kitchen will be back, along with Bombzies BBQ, Beulah’s Bean Truck, Curbside Creamery, Cassave Restaurant & Taqueria and Sunrise Deli. Seems like a pretty good way to spend a Sunday, especially when the weather’s nice. Check it out and let me know what you think!
