The East Bay has not one, but FOUR new wine bars:
Oakland-based Marc 49 opened a second location two months ago in Berkeley. They’re serving pretty much the same menu as the Temescal location, but with a more extensive wine list.

Enoteca Molinari is also open. Chef Steve Jaramillo (formerly of Lalime’s) will be in charge of the kitchen. The menu will include bar snacks like panissa fritta (golden chickpea fries), small plates and house made pastas. The wine bar is open Wed, Thurs, Sun 5 – 10pm, Fri & Sat, 5 – 11pm.

The Punchdown recently opened where the Franklin Square Wine Bar used to be, right next door to Plum. The name might sound kind of violent, but it’s actually a technical term used to describe the action of punching the cap of fermenting grapes “down to extract color, phenols, flavors, textures…and to act as a natural antioxidant in the fermenting wine.” Check it out Tuesdays – Fridays, noon – 9pm and Saturdays 5 – 10pm.

Toast Wine Bar isn’t exactly open per se, but during the kitchen build out, they’ll open the doors to sell goodies like proscuitto crisps, brown butter roasted walnuts, Coco Delice truffles and olive oil. Wed – Sun from 11am – 6pm. The owners have just started a Kickstartercampaign in the hopes of raising $15,000. The current total is $1,745, so check it out if you have a few extra dollars to spare..

And, so the beer drinkers don’t feel left out, Concord’s E. J. Phair Brewing Company opened a second location in Pittsburg. Right now, there are 12 beers on tap in the restaurant, and that number will increase to 21. There are salads, soups, burgers and mains on the regular menu, but something called The Pittsburger ($8), which is supposed to be long-time local favorite, is only served on Wednesdays. I’m intrigued…
